Ley Rubber pull out all the stops for NHS Nightingale

Manufacturer turns around bespoke critical product in just 24 hours

Liverpool based rubber manufacturer Ley Rubber Limited are one of many of the region’s companies rising to the challenge of the COVID 19 crisis.

The family owned business, who have been trading for 64 years, were recently issued with emergency orders to produce critical rubber profiling products for the Nightingale hospitals and for ventilator manufacturing. The team at Ley had to respond quickly and where tasked with getting samples delivered to the hospital for testing withing 36 hours of receiving the order.

Dean Wealleans, Managing Director of Ley Rubber commented

“Our customer originally wanted a different size profile, unfortunately materials were not available to execute manufacturing of this product in such a short lead time. As such, with our knowledge and expertise our team offered an alternative profile which was able to meet the timescales and manufactured an initial 100 products for Nightingale to test while we worked on getting the compound to manufacture the bulk once approved.”

The profile in question was required to prevent mobile nursing bays from running into bed bay dividers and are considered an essential health and safety item within the hospitals.

Ley Rubber managed to despatch 100 products within 36 hours from order and following testing at Nightingale, then completed the remaining 1700 needed, working night shifts and over the Easter weekend to ensure the NHS received the products in time.

Alongside this, the Liverpool company also manufactured and delivered anti-static tubing, another vital component used in critical ventilator projects and for hospital beds.

Dean continued

“When you think of the NHS, rubber components are not always the first thing that springs to mind, but they have many important applications right throughout the health sector.

I’m especially proud of my workforce who rose to the challenge, working additional shifts day and night to enable Ley to respond quickly and do our bit to help the NHS”

The customer was delighted with the speed and service provided by Ley Rubber and also the commitment made during the order by Ley, that they would only charge standard pricing, ensuring the NHS did not pay the additional factory overtime costs.
