What is Cork?
Cork has long been used as a product for sealing bottles and has been part of the winemaking industry and sectors such as scientific research for more than 100 years. Its use actually stretches back thousands of years – by 3,000 BC, for example, it was already being used in countries like China to seal vessels.
Today it’s also often used in various activities from arts and craft to home brewing and even fishing.
Cork is lightweight but impermeable which makes it a suitable material for sealing bottles, one of the main reasons why it has so often been associated with wineries around the world. Most people don’t realise that cork is not just impermeable, it’s elastic and can be cut to almost any shape and size.
Which Industries Use Cork?
Most of the cork we use in Ley Holdings comes from forests in Spain and Portugal which combined account for more than 50% of the world’s production.
While the most common use is in wine bottling, you may be surprised to find out that the material is used in a wide range of products from gaskets and woodwind musical instruments to research and development equipment, school science labs, shoes and cricket balls.
